September 2013 Expenses

It is my fifth month of tracking expenses related to all things dog.

September 2013 Expenses

Food-$155.95
Health-$8.00
Treats-$28.38
Misc-63.90

Total-$256.23

Food was my Raw Paws coOp order, a separate case of beef heart, and a few bags of chicken leg quarters.

Health was Bruce's prescription.

The treats total includes our Spoiled Rotten Box, and the chicken hearts I purchased to dehydrate for treats.  I debated on including them in the raw category, but seeing as they ultimately became treats, I accounted for them as such.

Miscellaneous expenses include the purchase of the Coolaroo bed, and Berry Balance supplement.  Also included in the miscellaneous category is a small amount I spent on shipping to order some hyaluronic acid for Neeko from Prime Pet Supply.  Maggie at Oh My Dog! recently partnered with Prime Pet Supply for a giveaway, which I luckily won!  I will be reviewing the hyaluronic acid supplement after a couple of weeks' worth of use.

I would say this is a fairly average (without vet expenses) month for us.  No real splurges or large expenses.

  1. This is a great thing for you to put out there. I come into contact with a lot of younger people, college student-aged kids, who want to get dogs. I tell them that dogs are expensive to maintain... (after they tell me that they're having trouble coming up with the adoption fee for the shelter). I think that your expenses look pretty modest but they'd break the bank for a college student. Thanks for doing this!

    1. I agree. I'm on a few Facebook dog groups, and cringe when I see people trying to figure out how they can get together money just to pay an adoption fee.

  2. I shudder to think what I spend on my dogs and cats, NYC area is very pricey. I feed Orijen, plus home cooked for Ping a special liver diet plus fresh add ons. We do two bags a month about and then the home cooked so that is probably around 250 plus treats and toys 40 plus health we spend 150 insure three of the dogs and one cat, the others where too old. Plus supplements and Norbert get Adequan injections for Norbert, insurance has not agreed to pay yet but may so that is 50 a month. So Id say about 500 a month if no one goes to the vet, if they do it creeps up to 700. All I can say is oh my god! It is totally worth it

  4. Great idea to keep track of your doggy expenses. As KB Bear said, a lot of people don't realize how expensive it can be to care for a dog

  5. This is really great! So many people don't consider the cost of being a good pet owner.
