Like many others, I enjoy making homemade treats for my dogs. I have complete control over the ingredients and the quality of them. Even Faolan, who is a notorious treat snob, always goes nuts for anything homemade.
Fish based treats almost always go over well here, I am guessing because of the smell?
I originally found this recipe on Dogster several years ago, and modified it a bit to contain less sodium.
The Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups flour. I use whole wheat, as my dogs do not seem to be gluten sensitive. Other flours may be substituted, but keep in mind that sometimes the ratio of liquid or eggs to flour may change.
- 2 cans boneless, skinless, no sodium added salmon in water. Tuna can also be used.
- 2 eggs.
- 1/4 cup shredded cheese.
- Optional-garlic powder, Rosemary, turmeric, etc.
The Process
Mix all ingredients well. It makes a thick dough. Press into greased 8x8 or 9x9 square cake pan. Bake at 350 F for 20 minutes.
I used three eggs because my chickens lay smallish eggs. |
Let cool, then cut or break into pieces.
What's nice about this is that it has the consistency of fudge, and small (or large) pieces are easily broken off.
The finished product. |
This actually makes quite a large amount of treats. I keep some in the fridge, and put the rest in the freezer.
My dogs love them!
Is your dog a fan of fish or fishy treats?
Shiner does love fish! But then again she loves anything with meat. This is such an awesome recipe though. Haven't seen any like it yet!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great picture at the top! It almost makes me want to take a bite, but then I remember it's "fishy fudge" and I decide not to, LOL. I love the addition to cheese. Is there anything that just isn't BETTER with cheese??
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe and w/ cheese too :-) I've been using lots of tumeric, it's great. Happy Tasty Tuesday. Golden Woofs
