Snow Day Treat-Homemade Snow Ice Cream

While not necessarily for dogs, I couldn't resist posting about this.  On Sunday, it snowed.  A bunch.  In fact, I believe a 24 hour snow fall record for Indianapolis was broken.  Anyways, we had lots of fun playing in the snow before the bitterly cold temperatures moved in.

I was perusing Pinterest, and came across a fun pin by Heartprints Pets on how to make snow ice cream, and I couldn't resist making some, and then sharing with the pups.

The Ingredients:

1 cup milk (I feel heavy cream would have worked better, and considered using a can of coconut cream I had on hand...)

1/4 cup sugar

1 tsp vanilla extract

4-5 cups fresh, clean snow.  Avoid the yellow snow.

homemade ice cream, snow ice cream, ice cream for dogs

Our snow was wet and heavy, and I feel that impacted the texture/consistency of the finished product.

Mix all ingredients well, and enjoy!

This was actually quite tasty, tasting much like Breyer's Natural Vanilla ice cream.

I know some feel that dogs should be given dairy, or sugar, but I could not resist offering my mutts a little treat.  Everything in moderation, I say, and none of them have ever had a problem with dairy in the past.

It is obvious that they all enjoyed this little treat.  This was fun to do, and I hope to do it again soon, perhaps with my nieces and nephews.

  1. Wow!!! What a great recipe!!! I have to try that! Thanks so much for sharing!
I remember when I was a kid my grandma used to make us snow toffee. We would go get a pan of (clean) snow lol and she would make homemade toffee (boiling it in a pot) and before it hardened we would poke finger holes in the tray of snow and dump the toffee in it, after it sat for like a minute u could pull out the finger of toffee and eat it! It was delicious!!!

  2. Now my mom keeps singing "Watch out where the huskies go, don't you eat that yellow snow!" But seriously, that looks yummy. Maybe we'll try it if we ever get any snow.

  3. Ice always comes with a price here. You dogs are so lucky that all you guys had to do was get out of the house and take some from the ground. LOL.
