I Love My Job

Believe it or not, this blogging thing doesn't pay the bills.  So I have to put my college education to good use.

I am a Home Health RN Case Manager.  There are many things I love about my job.  I love making a difference, teaching, helping.  I love the freedom and autonomy.  I love that I am constantly learning.

I love that most of my patients have pets.

On any given day, I am in anywhere from 3-12 different homes.  At least half of these homes have a dog or cat, or both.  I couldn't be happier.  Some of these animals are friendly and outgoing, some scared and nervous.  I let the patients/owners and animals decide what sort of interaction will take place.

I think these animals know that I have dogs and cats of my own at home, because most are incredibly happy to see me, even at the start of care.  It helps that I usually have treats in my work bag...

Crappy failed attempt at a patient pet selfie.
These animals brighten my day, and make me love my already rewarding, enjoyable job even more.  I honestly feel that they are incredibly beneficial to their owners as well, some with acute problems, others with chronic issues.  I know when I have had a rough day or am not feeling well, my dogs make me feel better just by being them.  (Unless Bruce is being an asshole.)

I see big dogs, little dogs, medium dogs.  Purebred dogs, mutts, designer dogs.  Affectionate cats, nosy cats, bitchy cats.  And I look forward to seeing each of them.

In fact, I am more likely to remember the names of a patient's pets than the names of their (human) family members.

What's the best part of your job?

  3. I agree with you that it would be great if blogging, or in my case blogging and making dog and cat toys, did pay the bills. I am work with people everyday, I am a youth programs director for a non-profit, and I think my favorite part of my job is the variety. Always a new challenge or a new situation that you can help someone navigate. The successes are the best.

  4. Ha! I wish blogging paid the bills. It feels like it will remain a dream rather than anything logically thought! haha! Ah well, the favorite part of my job is that currently I am a stay at home mom, so I get to be here with my kids and fur babies every day.

  7. It sounds like you have a great job. I am more likely to remember people based on their pets and remember their pet's names and not their name....lol.

  8. When doing something you love, it won't seem like a job at all. It's so nice to see you enjoy your job and how happy your clients and their pets make you.

However, there is nothing I like about my job, LOL. My co-workers are wonderful, but I'm still in search of a position / job that I actually enjoy.

  10. That's so great that you have that extra bonus to a job you already love. I work in a general store as a bookkeeper and my favorite thing is when a customer brings in a new puppy to show us! I always get called down from my office when anyone comes in the door with one (and occasionally cats too!).
