Selfish Reasons I am Thankful for My Dogs

It's Thanksgiving Day in the US, a day to gather with friends and family and reflect upon that of which we are thankful. I have many things to be thankful for. I have a great job, fantastic friends and family, good health, and a roof over my head. Of course I am thankful for my dogs.

I could list all the generic reasons I am grateful/thankful for my particular dogs, but they would be the same ones every other dog owner on this planet would list. Instead, I give you some specifics.

They don't eat poop. Dog poop anyway. All of them are guilty of indulging in other species' poop via rolling or eating, but thank goodness they don't eat their own or each other's poop.

They have iron stomachs.  I credit this to raw feeding. Neeko had a delicate gut as a puppy, and it was a constant battle. Until I switched to raw.

They are all crate trained, and willingly go into their crates.

They are damn good looking dogs. They all get attention, wherever they go.

They make me laugh.

They don't take forever to find the perfect spot to pee. On walks, I can pretty much guarantee that they will all pee pretty much immediately.

For the most part, they are not picky eaters. Neeko has texture issues, and neither her nor Bruce are crazy about rabbit, but that's pretty much it.

They are patient with me. Sometimes.

They don't shed much at all. Except in the Spring and early Summer.

They are food driven, and will do just about anything for a treat. For the most part.

They allow me to meet new people. Their size and appearance are instant conversation starters.

They are not puppies. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE puppies, but puppies are a ton of work. At 5, 6, and 7 years old, they have somewhat mellowed out and are fairly predictable.

They are not seniors. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE senior dogs, but they are a ton of work. At 5, 6, and 7 years old, they are still relatively young, and quite healthy. (I guess Bruce is technically a senior.)

They are noisy. Ain't nobody sneaking up on my house.

They don't stink. And the boys' fur naturally repels dirt. Faolan and Bruce haven't had baths in over four years. Neeko gets about 2-3 per year.

There you have it. An incomplete list of all the selfish reasons I am thankful for my dogs.  Along the same lines, why are you thankful for your dogs?

  1. Yes to almost all of those except the bathing - Nola's bathed about every week, since my skin doesn't like touching dirty dog. It decides to break out if the dogs are super dirty. I'm SO happy for no poop eaters or seniors! I'm already exhausted with the puppy stage. ;)

They provide me with hours of entertainment, even if I'm just looking out the window at them.
They alow me to educate others about "the breed"
They are each unique and have their own set of quirks as well.
