Homemade Grain-free Dog Cookies

My woofers seem to know when a treat is homemade.  They salivate, and are more excited than usual to receive a treat.  I decided to bake some cookies for them today.

I found the recipe on the K9 Instinct Blog.  Great blog about training, nutrition, etc.

The Cast of Characters

-1/2 cup creamy peanut butter.
-1/2 cup mashed blueberries.  I already had frozen blueberries in the fridge, which I thawed.  They are difficult to mash.
-1/2 cup mashed banana.
-1 cup coconut flour.  I had to go to a nearby health food store to find this.
-4 eggs.
-1/3 cup warm water.  I ended up adding a bit more at the end.

The mashed blueberries and banana, with 1/3 cup warm water.  I was ready to eat this, it looked and smelled so good.

I mixed all the ingredients together with a large wooden spoon.  I needed some manpower, so I called in Les for reinforcement to finish mixing.

The finished dough.  It was thick and sticky.  More so than other homemade treats/cookies I have made for the dogs in the past.

I then rolled out the dough. I've lost misplaced my bone-shaped cookie cutter, so I used a round one instead.

There was enough dough for 14 largish cookies, plus the leftover trim.

I baked at 350 F for 22 minutes.

The finished product
After baking, I cut/broke each cookie into four pieces.

Neeko and Bruce will readily take just about anything I offer them.  Except rabbit meat.  The turds don't like raw rabbit.  The real test was to be Faolan's reaction to the cookies.  He is odd.  He doesn't like popcorn or French fries.  Some treats he doesn't seem to care for.  He will make funny faces, and spit stuff out.

I had my camera ready to capture his funny face.  He occasionally makes it at treats he loves.  No luck this time.  He took his cookie with zero hesitation, no faces involved.

Waiting like a good little boy
I will make these again.  The K9 Instinct blog has several other treats that I plan on making as well.  If anyone has a homemade treat recipe that's a favorite in their house, I'd love to see it!

  6. I just made these, and you are so right, the dough was super sticky. I added more flour to try to thicken it, but ended up just putting them in the oven like a brownie mix. I don't think the dogs will care if they are bars or cookies. They sure smell wonderful.
