Oh The Things You'll Chew! Barkworthies Root Chews

My dogs like to chew. Unfortunately, they aren't terribly picky about what they will chew on. Fortunately, they don't destroy too many things.

They chew on things meant to be chewed on - bully sticks and other edible chews, toys, long lasting treats, etc. They also sometimes chew on things that aren't necessarily meant to be chewed on...

Bruce isn't the only one who likes to chew on wood. Neeko and Faolan enjoy their fair share of it. I love fairly rural, so wood is in abundance.

Barkworthies has recently released Root Chews, a new, sustainable, natural wood chew for dogs.

They are available in three sizes.

Neeko couldn't wait for me to get the wrapper off, and was trying to help herself.

These single piece chews are sustainably harvest from the root of the arrack tree. Only a limited number are cut down each year.

The chews are of interesting shape and texture. Neeko has a sensitive mouth, so the way things feel are important to her and her enjoyment of chewing. These fit the bill.

They don't leave a mess, and almost seem to absorb some of the drool that sometimes occurs with a good chewing session.

They are nontoxic and contain some trace minerals. They don't splinter, don't smell, and are surprisingly light weight.

February is National Pet Dental Health, so many are on the look out for ways to keep a dog's teeth clean. Giving a dog appropriate items to chew and eat is one of the best ways to keep their dental health at its best.

Maybe now Bruce will stop chewing on 2x4's. And bricks. And anything else he can sink his teeth into. Doubtful.

Black & White Sunday

She has the best smile. I have a new ottoman. It is 36" by 36". So basically the perfect size perch/bed for my dogs. At least they think that's what it's intended use is. My dogs are capable of taking up a great deal of space, but also of making themselves quite small when the situation arises. "Get in where you fit in" is one of their mottos. 12" left on the couch? No problem says Neeko.

Working Dogs Need a Job - Kurgo Big Baxter Backpack

My dogs all have some northern breed or combination of northern breeds in them. I have ran Wisdom Panels on both Neeko and Faolan, and both indicated the presence of Alaskan Malamute. I know Bruce's background, and he is at least half Alaskan Malamute.

Alaskan Malamutes, along with many other breeds, are considered "working dogs." They are built to pull. I work hard to keep my dogs from pulling while on leash. Mushing is not a viable option for us, partly due to their general disregard for my wishes most of the time. However, there are many ways I can keep them mentally stimulated and give them a job to do.

We do trick training and active lured behaviors outdoors. Believe it or not, all of my dogs know several tricks and behaviors. Another good way to put them to work is to have them carry things with a backpack.

I have tried various backpacks in the past. When Neeko was younger, I would load up a backpack with water bottles and take her for a walk. She tired out more quickly with the load. A tired dog is a good dog.

The other backpacks I tried were typically disappointing. They didn't fit well, weren't visually attractive, and seemed to be of poor quality.

We recently received the Kurgo Big Baxter Dog Backpack.

It is very well made. Tough nylon straps with saddlebags, contoured spine support and chest plate made of durable, resistant material. It is also attractive, available in a variety of colors. I chose red, because it is a color that contrasts beautifully with all three of my dogs fur.

The Big Baxter is made for dogs 50-110 lbs. That is a broad size range, but the backpack has eight different points of size adjustment. There is a 30 lb and 4" size difference between Neeko and Faolan, but with adjustments, the backpack fit both of them very well.

It was also comfortable for them, There have been times where my dogs would not sit or lie down wearing various backpacks or harnesses, because they were uncomfortable for them. That is not the case with the Baxter Backpack.

Faolan had no problem being his normal rambunctious self while on a snowy hike wearing the Baxter Backpack.

Other things I love about the Big Baxter Backpack from Kurgo:

  • It has a chest plate that connects by going between the dog's legs as opposed to just a strap across the chest.
  • Their is a handle on the back, for added control.
  • The saddlebags are roomy, plenty of room for other gear and goodies.
  • It has a leash clip on the back, so it can also be used as a harness.
  • Their is a bottle opener on the chest plate!
It has a bottle opener built in!
I love taking both Neeko and Faolan out and about. Sometimes it is a hassle to juggle a leash and a backpack (for myself) or a purse. I can put my dogs to work! They can carry their own stuff (treats, toys, etc) but also carry my stuff for me! Phone, wallet, keys and the like.

I am very happy with this product. It is well made, sharp looking, easy to adjust and apply. It can assist with giving my dogs a "job" to do, but also make my life a bit easier by having them carry my stuff for me!

Have you used a backpack for your dogs?

I was provided with complimentary product. All opinions are my own.

My Furry Valentine

I love my dogs for different reasons, and I don't have favorites. But Neeko is my Valentine. She is and always will be my best girl.

Like a woman, she can be fickle and moody. But she is elegant, and appreciates the finer things in life.

She is calm when I am not, steadfast during turmoil. Always up for a challenge, an adventure, or a good time, she knows how to make me laugh. She is also excellent at eliciting exasperated sighs and eye rolls from me.

Her pushiness tends to get her what she wants, she knows how to work me.

Princess pretty girl.

Dog Poetry for Valentine's Day

Roses are red
I am the queen
A dog as pretty as me
Has yet to be seen.
~Neeko

Roses are red
I am forever sweet
I will trade kisses
For a scrumptious treat.
~Faolan

Roses are red
Sometimes I drool
Please feed me dinner
Before I think you a fool.
~Bruce

How would your dog's poetry read?

Damn it, Bruce

I often lament about Bruce. Perhaps lament is not the right word. I often bitch about Bruce. And until you have experienced him first hand, or a dog like him, you cannot judge me.

But he's so handsome!

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love Bruce. I have to, or why else would I have put up with him for nearly six years?

His issues go beyond reactivity and fear.  He is unpredictable and can be aggressive. I get judged for some of my methods with him, but I'm ok with that. I have to be able to control my dog. I refuse to allow him to live a life confined to the yard, so I take him on walks in safe areas. And I use a prong collar on him when doing so. Bruce has worked with three different trainers, two of them strictly positive reinforcement, and one of the "balanced" (whatever that means), and none could fully control him. He did pass a very basic obedience class, because he is very obedient when he chooses to be. He only chooses to be if there are no other stimuli present.

I have written multiple times about him and his antics. See here and here, for a couple of examples. Though tongue in cheek, this post highlights several of Bruce's less than desirable behaviors.

Just how bad is he, you ask?

I posted this video on Facebook and Instagram, but not here. Prior to this, Bruce had never demonstrated an interest in electronics. That has changed. At the end, you can see his reaction to me touching his back. Fortunately that caused him to drop my phone, which I then covered with my foot.

In some ways he is so much better than he was nearly six years ago. He no longer feels the need to guard space from me, or try to steal things directly from me. In some ways he is worse. If he decides he wants something, game over. He will make every attempt to get it, and nothing can distract him. Very rarely does he give anything up. This dog is lucky he hasn't had a bowel obstruction, with the number of socks he has eaten.

I dare you to try to take the Jolly Ball away from him.
I haven't taken a vacation in a while. Bruce is 100% unboardable. If he were smaller, and easy to physically control, it wouldn't be such a big issue. But he 95 lbs of muscle, fear, and attitude.

There are exactly four people I would trust to stay with Bruce. Not that I don't trust people, I mostly don't trust Bruce. One of them recently moved to California. Two of them are my old neighbors, and they have busy lives, three dogs and a cat of their own. The other is my twin sister, and her work is an hour away from me, and she has a family of her own plus two dogs. But she recently agreed to stay at my house if I ever need her to, after I offered her $100 per day to do so. I feel it's a bargain. But...she would have to come beforehand and learn the mealtime routines.

Ah mealtimes. My dogs eat twice daily. They don't need two meals, but I don't think Bruce could emotionally handle only eating once a day. Mealtimes are a circus, a process. It's a good thing I live rural. My house sounds like a kennel, or a dog fighting ring, at mealtimes.

I call him names. Most not appropriate for mixed company. He's an asshole. A douchebag. A jerk. I say "damn it, Bruce" at least three times daily. One thing I don't do with him is raise my voice in a true angry tone. That gets him grumbly, defensive, fearful and ready to react. Even when his behavior is wretched, I try and speak to him in a sweet, soothing voice. He loves praise, and sing-song voices. If he has the slightest inkling that you don't want him to do or have something, he is going to try his damnedest to do it or get it.

But I love him. I love how excited he is to see me, the way he sings at me. I love the way he dances. I love how intensely he stares when I tell him to "watch me." He is easily the most affectionate of my crew, and usually the most obedient.

He is handsome, sweet and funny. He is also fearful, reactive, aggressive and labile. Its a difficult combination. I don't trust him, but I love him.

Black & White Sunday

Are you ready for some football?

The Super Bowl is tonight, obviously. I'm on call for work, and hoping I don't get called out. My dogs don't care, but Bruce is excited for snacks.

Faolan Gets Some #LoveFromStella and You Can Too!

Fact - My dogs are my funny (and furry) Valentines year round. I am in love with this Valentine's Day card Stella & Chewy's made of Faolan.

For a chance to get a custom digital card of your cat or dog, follow Stella & Chewy's on Facebook and Instagram and post a photo with #LoveFromStella.

Faolan is a lover, and I likely could hashtag about him all day.

My Rotten Dogs is a Stella & Chewy's ambassador. I am compensated for helping to spread the word about Stella & Chewy's, but only support products I believe in and use for my own dogs.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Stella & Chewy's. The opinions and text are all mine.
