Letting Your Bird Spread it's Wings with The Aviator Harness and Leash #ChewyInfluencer

Until recently I did not that harnesses designed to allow pet birds to fly and explore the outdoors existed. The Aviator bird harness and leash does just that.

The Aviator is available in 8 sizes, designed to fit birds as small as parakeets, and up to as large as chickens, macaws, ducks, and geese, and every size bird in between, including parrots.

My birds typically free range most of the time, but recently they have not. I am temporarily housing some pigs for my neighbors, and I am not sure how the pigs would react to a chicken in their pen, so my girls have been confined to their "run" area most of the time. They definitely miss the grass, bugs, and weeds.

I'm not going to lie, I am getting attached to the 4 pigs staying with us. The dogs are even getting used to them!

The aviator comes with the harness and leash as a one piece system, with the harness being 10 feet long, and extensions are available.

It includes a 45 minute instructional DVD, with information on fitting the harness, and safety tips. If sized and fitted appropriately, it is escape-proof.

After watching the DVD, I decided to try it out first on my adult Rhode Island Red, as she is a champion free ranger.

It took her several minutes to get used to it at first. Have you ever seen a cat in a harness? They sometimes flop over and are completely motionless and helpless. That was her initial reaction. It was honestly quite funny.

After a few minutes, she decided she was fine with it, and took to scratching, pecking, and eating vegetation and bugs, happier than a pig in ...

I had to keep up with her! Any sort of tension on the harness caused her to fall over and become helpless, so I ensured we kept a loose leash. My dogs love to pull, my chickens not so much.

Now your chicken can safely cross the road!!

This is actually a brilliant product. I have put it to good use during this time when I am not allowing my birds to free range, and it is a fun way to take a chicken on a walk, although the chicken gets to lead the way.

It is perfect for those with indoor pet birds who wish to allow their pets to experience the outdoors, and potentially flight, in a safe manner.

It is very important to watch the included DVD, and make sure the harness is fitted properly prior to use.

We are having quite a bit of fun with it here at my house, and I am certain my neighbors are laughing at me, but I'm ok with that.

My Rotten Cats - Weruva Cats in the Kitchen Pouches #ChewyInfluencer

I know, you have heard it from me a million times; cats need wet food. I often repeat myself regarding this. And I will continue to do so, because moisture is so important in a cat's diet.

Our friends at chewy.com sent Juice and Noelle a variety pack of Weruva Cats in the Kitchen pouches and I was more than happy to accepts. Because, you know, I am a fanatic about giving cats raw or wet food.

The variety pack contains 12 pouches, 2 each of 6 different flavors, all fish or poultry based, though 1 does contain beef.

What I like about these pouches:

• They have a high moisture content.
• They have limited, simple ingredients - water, named meats, (gluten-free) tapioca starch as a thickener, sunflower seed oil as a fat, and vitamins.
• My cats love them, and eat them with gusto.

I am comfortable and confident feeding these to my girls. 

One (minor) thing I didn't like is the consistency and packaging of the product made it difficult to get all of the food out of the pouch without cutting it, which isn't very convenient. I feel as though 10% or more of each pouch is wasted, because it is stuck in the pouch.

I often preach about my love for single or limited ingredient treats for my dogs. The same holds true for my cats; the fewer ingredients, the better.

Northern Breed Coat Care Featuring Nourish by Isle of Dogs

While all three of my dogs are "northern breed mixes" they have three different fur types. Caring for the coat of any dog can be a challenge, though it doesn't have to be.

Coat health starts within, and Isle of Dogs Nourish products are a beneficial addition.

Diet. The best thing I do for my dogs' coats is feeding them a raw diet. I personally feel that unnecessary ingredients, fillers, and poor quality ingredients will take their toll on a dog's coat by making it either too dry or too oily, "dirty" feeling, and even increase the rate at which they shed. Proper nutrition can contribute to a healthy coat, be it in the form of a raw diet, a balanced homemade cooked diet, or high quality kibble or canned food.

Neeko has a very woolly coat, with long guard hairs, and the thickest undercoat I've ever encountered on a dog. Bruce has what I consider a typical northern breed coat, and Faolan's is a combination of northern breed and GSD.

Coat care is not one size fits all, especially in my house.

Bathing. I am not a fan of or believer in over bathing dogs. It can strip the natural oils and dry out the skin, contributing to itchiness and fur loss. If a dog feels oily or is stinky without good reason, the problem could be due to diet or genetics. Some fur types are prone to holding odor more than others.
My boys haven't had baths in five years, yet both are soft, and neither stink or feel dirty. Neeko gets 4-5 baths per year, usually all in the spring and fall, due to the changes in her coat during these time periods.

Brushing. Regular brushing of northern breed dogs is important, not only during periods of seasonal shedding. It helps to spread the natural oils and keep the coat conditioned, and remove debris. It also helps to prevent small tangles from becoming large mats that must be cut out. It can be a way to bond with your dog, and also a way to examine the rest of their body and structure.  Don't wait until your northern breed is blowing coat to brush, brush them regularly throughout the year. (Disclaimer - none of my dogs are huge fans of being brushed...)

Black Cat After Dark #ChewyInfluencer

I am a huge fan of wet food in a cat's diet for a variety of reasons. It provides much needed moisture, is less processed, and even the pickiest of cats seem to enjoy wet food.

We were sent the 6 flavor variety pack of Tiki Cat After Dark. From the chewy website "a selection of gourmet recipes that are carefully designed to mimic a natural prey diet." As someone who feeds her dogs a prey model raw diet, and has attempted multiple times to do the same with her cats, this makes me happy.

It contains 6 different flavors, all chicken based, with broth, meat, and organs as the primary ingredients.

It looks good enough for me to eat.

Sleek Noelle (can you believe she is almost 12?!) will sometimes attempt to cover wet foods with her paw if they do not please her. That was not the case with Tiki Cat After Dark.

I love watching her lap up the broth, and devour the food. Cats tend to not have a strong thirst drive, as they are meant to get moisture and fluids from the food they eat. So I love the broth in this food.

I love that it is grain-free. Juice kitty seems to have food allergies, and this has not aggravated them in the slightest.

I am glad to include this in my girls' wet food rotation. It is a wet food made from real ingredients, is grain-free, provides ample moisture, and they love the taste!

The Honest Kitchen Perfect Form #ChewyInfluencer

I cannot recall the last time Bruce or Faolan had any gastrointestinal upset. (Not counting the occasional hunger puke from Bruce.) Neeko had a horrible time with GI issues as a puppy, which is what prompted me to switch to a raw diet for my dogs.

90% of the time, she has an iron gut. However, she will sometimes have a loose stool or two. I don't worry about it unless it happens for three consecutive poops.

Rewarding Behaviors with #StellaandChewys

It's no secret that I am a fan of Stella & Chewy's raw food. My dogs are as well. While I haven't personally tasted it, it's apparently delicious.

So much so that my dogs are willing to work for it.

I admit, I regularly bribe my dogs for good or desired behaviors, or for doing "tricks" that I want them to do. They typically comply, but the reward has to be worth it in their opinions at times. Stella & Chewy's is nearly always worth it to them.

I haven't taught any new tricks or behaviors recently, with the exception of teaching Faolan to "crawl." However, we still do regular sessions of their known tricks and behaviors, to keep them sharp.

When I do these outdoors, there are distractions. My chickens, other birds and critters, each other my neighbors tractor, lawnmower, golfcart, etc. So have to have something very high value to keep their attention.

Notice how intently (for the most part) are paying attention to me? I believe it's because of the pieces of Stella & Chewy's I was holding. Faolan in particular wanted MY attention and the treats, and was being pretty demanding (but still cute) by barking at me.

It's quite easy to use the food as treats. Though it is freeze-dried, it is not super crumbly. The patties easily break into smaller pieces to be used as treats.

My dogs definitely go nuts for these, and are willing to work. I need to put my thinking cap on, and come up with new tricks and behaviors to teach them using these as a reward.

As many know, I try to feed my cats as much wet food as possible, as they are averse to most forms of raw.

There are not many supplements I offer my dogs, but fish oil, especially wild salmon oil, is one that I have no qualms about giving.

Some question why dogs, particularly those fed a raw diet, need a salmon oil supplement. I supplement with salmon oil for a few reasons:

• It's good for their skin and coat.
• To offset the high levels of Omega 6 fatty acids that are present in non organic/non grassfed meat.

My Rotten Cats - Instinct Raw Boost Mixers #ChewyInfluencer

I admit it, my cats don't eat a full raw diet.

I feed them high quality kibble and canned (which probably costs more than a raw diet.) They will eat some raw, but it is rare, and they have to be in the mood for it.

Like dogs, cats can benefit from some form of raw, and a variety of proteins in their diet. To me it seems easier to offer dogs "exotic" proteins, whether in the form of raw, kibble, or canned.

Our friends at Chewy.com sent the girls some Instinct Raw Boost Mixers to try out, in their rabbit formula.

To me, this accomplished two things - it offers the girls a form of raw, and provides them with an "exotic" protein.

These contain rabbit, pork liver, pork heart, and a variety of produce, and are designed to "mirror your cat's ideal ancestral diet."

They are freeze-dried nuggets of goodness. At first I thought they would be too big for my cats' mouths, but Juice and Noelle have had no problems chomping them down.

They are meant to be fed in addition to your cat's normal diet, but I do offer these stand alone on occasion. TIP - add warm water to them to ensure your cat stays adequately hydrated. (I know I am always pushing hydration in cats.)

My girls are definitely enjoying them. These are dual purpose in my house, as they also make wonderful training treats for the dogs!

Oh The Things You'll Chew! Barkworthies Root Chews

My dogs like to chew. Unfortunately, they aren't terribly picky about what they will chew on. Fortunately, they don't destroy too many things.

They chew on things meant to be chewed on - bully sticks and other edible chews, toys, long lasting treats, etc. They also sometimes chew on things that aren't necessarily meant to be chewed on...

Bruce isn't the only one who likes to chew on wood. Neeko and Faolan enjoy their fair share of it. I love fairly rural, so wood is in abundance.

Barkworthies has recently released Root Chews, a new, sustainable, natural wood chew for dogs.

They are available in three sizes.

Neeko couldn't wait for me to get the wrapper off, and was trying to help herself.

These single piece chews are sustainably harvest from the root of the arrack tree. Only a limited number are cut down each year.

The chews are of interesting shape and texture. Neeko has a sensitive mouth, so the way things feel are important to her and her enjoyment of chewing. These fit the bill.

They don't leave a mess, and almost seem to absorb some of the drool that sometimes occurs with a good chewing session.

They are nontoxic and contain some trace minerals. They don't splinter, don't smell, and are surprisingly light weight.

February is National Pet Dental Health, so many are on the look out for ways to keep a dog's teeth clean. Giving a dog appropriate items to chew and eat is one of the best ways to keep their dental health at its best.

Maybe now Bruce will stop chewing on 2x4's. And bricks. And anything else he can sink his teeth into. Doubtful.

Working Dogs Need a Job - Kurgo Big Baxter Backpack

My dogs all have some northern breed or combination of northern breeds in them. I have ran Wisdom Panels on both Neeko and Faolan, and both indicated the presence of Alaskan Malamute. I know Bruce's background, and he is at least half Alaskan Malamute.

Alaskan Malamutes, along with many other breeds, are considered "working dogs." They are built to pull. I work hard to keep my dogs from pulling while on leash. Mushing is not a viable option for us, partly due to their general disregard for my wishes most of the time. However, there are many ways I can keep them mentally stimulated and give them a job to do.

We do trick training and active lured behaviors outdoors. Believe it or not, all of my dogs know several tricks and behaviors. Another good way to put them to work is to have them carry things with a backpack.

I have tried various backpacks in the past. When Neeko was younger, I would load up a backpack with water bottles and take her for a walk. She tired out more quickly with the load. A tired dog is a good dog.

The other backpacks I tried were typically disappointing. They didn't fit well, weren't visually attractive, and seemed to be of poor quality.

We recently received the Kurgo Big Baxter Dog Backpack.

It is very well made. Tough nylon straps with saddlebags, contoured spine support and chest plate made of durable, resistant material. It is also attractive, available in a variety of colors. I chose red, because it is a color that contrasts beautifully with all three of my dogs fur.

The Big Baxter is made for dogs 50-110 lbs. That is a broad size range, but the backpack has eight different points of size adjustment. There is a 30 lb and 4" size difference between Neeko and Faolan, but with adjustments, the backpack fit both of them very well.

It was also comfortable for them, There have been times where my dogs would not sit or lie down wearing various backpacks or harnesses, because they were uncomfortable for them. That is not the case with the Baxter Backpack.

Faolan had no problem being his normal rambunctious self while on a snowy hike wearing the Baxter Backpack.

Other things I love about the Big Baxter Backpack from Kurgo:

• It has a chest plate that connects by going between the dog's legs as opposed to just a strap across the chest.
• Their is a handle on the back, for added control.
• The saddlebags are roomy, plenty of room for other gear and goodies.
• It has a leash clip on the back, so it can also be used as a harness.
• Their is a bottle opener on the chest plate!

It has a bottle opener built in!

I love taking both Neeko and Faolan out and about. Sometimes it is a hassle to juggle a leash and a backpack (for myself) or a purse. I can put my dogs to work! They can carry their own stuff (treats, toys, etc) but also carry my stuff for me! Phone, wallet, keys and the like.

I am very happy with this product. It is well made, sharp looking, easy to adjust and apply. It can assist with giving my dogs a "job" to do, but also make my life a bit easier by having them carry my stuff for me!
