What's in a BarkBox? I used to reviews monthly of the BarkBoxes that my dogs received. (They get more mail than I do.) I stopped because I felt the quality had dropped, and I just wasn't excited about them. This month was the best BarkBox we have received in a while, so I decided it was worth posting about.

This month's theme is "A Lick in Wonderland" and the items seem to place on an Alice in Wonderland type theme.

January 2016 BarkBox Review

This month's BarkBox was sitting on the porch earlier this week!  My dogs truly get more mail than I do.  To read reviews of past and/or current BarkBoxes, click HERE.

This month's theme is Peace, 'Ruv', Happiness.

The Goods

Ducky Tenders.  Approximate retail value $8.13.  Made by Loving Pets and specially packaged for BarkBox.  These soft treats contain decent ingredients, and I am sure my dogs will love them!

Jax and Bones Peace Toy.  Approximate retail value $16.99.  Neeko LOVES Jax and Bones rope toys.  They are probably her favorite toys ever.  Seriously.  She has been through several of them.  I am thrilled to receive this.  The peace sign goes along perfectly with this month's theme.  Did I mention Neeko loves Jax and Bones toys?

American Hound Jerky Dog Treats. Unknown retail value.  Pork based, American made, jerky style treats.  These contain decent ingredients, and come in long, jerky-like strips that easily break into smaller pieces.  The dogs have already sampled them, and give them 12 paws up.

"Curly Chew" Dehydrated Lamb Ear.  Approximate retail value $1.00.  Single ingredient treat.  I cannot make up my mind whether or not I think these are similar to rawhide.  I have given them to my dogs in the past, and they were enjoyed, with no issues.  I guess the question is - which dog will get to enjoy this one?

Think!dog Rolling Stones Record Toy.  Unknown value. Cute toy with large squeaker.  While I am sure it won't last too long, it is fun and I know the dogs will enjoy it.

I am very impressed with this month's BarkBox.  The Jax and Bones toy makes it worth it to me.  Did I mention Neeko loves them?  Two packages of quality soft treats, of different proteins (duck and pork), two quality toys, and a chew.  Again, I am quite pleased with it this month.  To try BarkBox for yourself, and have a free box added to your plan, click HERE.

I know last month I said that BarkBox no longer appears to have themes with their boxes, but this month's box definitely has a Christmas feel.

October 2015 BarkBox

What's in a BarkBox?  We received the October BarkBox yesterday, so let us take a look!  To read reviews of previous and/or current BarkBoxes, click HERE.

I think this month's theme is Trick-or-Treat.  All product opinions are how I feel about a particular item in regards to my dogs.  What does not work for them could very well work wonderfully for another's dog.

The Goods

Butcher's Block Beef Knuckle Slice.  Approximate retail value $7.95.  I don't give my dogs roasted bones, because I feel they are not safe for my dogs.  Others may feel differently with their particular dogs, but I am a member of the "no cooked bones" camp, unless the bone completely crumbles easily.

No Grainers Jerky Chews. Approximate retail value $5.97.  These semi-soft treats are grain and gluten-free.  They are approximately 2" in length, but break into smaller pieces.  My dogs are willing to work for treats like this, so they will be put to good use.

Giggle Dynamite toy.  Unknown value.  A combo of rope and rubber, that makes a strange "giggling" noise when shaken or jostled.  My dogs will certainly enjoy the two different textures, and I will enjoy some games of tug with them.

Hyper Pet Doggie Tail.  Approximate retail value $12.99.  This toy moves on it's own.  A clever idea, but not particularly durable, for toy dissectors such as my dogs.  I will allow Neeko to interact with it, because I want to see her reaction.  I may make a video.  I also cannot wait to show it to my cats, to see what they think.  This would be ideal for smaller dogs who are gentler on toys than my mutts.

Wheezy Wolfy's Salmon Half Skin.  Unknown retail value.  A dehydrated salmon skin roll.  I know all three of my dogs would love this, but I have to choose the lucky one who will receive it...

This month's BarkBox is OK.  The treats will be put to use, and one dog will enjoy the salmon skin roll.  I am disappointed by the roasted bone, but that is just me.

September 2015 BarkBox Review

This month's theme is Bedtime Story.

The Goods

Starlight Bite Plush Toy.  Listed retail value $14.00.  Cute plush toy with squeakers.  It feels fairly durable as far as plush toys go.  Adorable, and fits well with the theme.  I *may* let Neeko play with this some.

Organicfuls Chamomile, Honey and Duck treats.  Listed retail value $8.00.  Whole, quality, mostly organic ingredients in these smallish biscuit treats.  Grain, GMO, and soy-free!  Bruce loves biscuit type treats more than Neeko and Faolan, but these have coconut listed as an ingredient, and he has demonstrated a sensitivity to coconut in the past.  While this seems to be an excellent product, I am on the fence about offering it to my dogs.

Chuckit Max Glow.  Approximate retail value $8.99.  What dog doesn't love chuckit balls?  This one fits in the large holder, and glows in the dark after being exposed to light.  I can't wait to try it out.

Butcher's Block Bully Chew.  Listed retail value $4.00.  We love bully sticks here.  However, we have received this product from this company in the past, and they do not last nearly as long as other bully sticks, even ones that are shorter than this.  I am still pleased to have received it.  

Grandpaws Lamb and Kale soft treats.  Listed retail value $8.00.  Small, soft, grain-free training treats with ok ingredients.  My dogs tend to love any soft treat, particularly if they are slightly stinky.  These fit the bill, and I am sure my dogs will enjoy them.

August 2015 BarkBox Review

This month's theme is "Block Pawty."

The Goods

Healthy Dogma Bacon Barkers. Approximate retail value $4.75.  Small biscuit type treats.  Relatively simple ingredients, and corn, wheat, soy and yeast-free.  I know for a fact that Bruce will love these!

SodaPup Toy.  Approximate retail value $12.99.  KONG like toy made in the USA of natural rubber.  Medium size opening on bottom, small opening on top.  Cute, and who cannot use another treat dispensing toy?

Bocce's Bakery Chicken Biscuits.  Approximate retail value $10.30.  Four(!!) ingredients in these treats!  We have received products from this company in the past, and they have always gone over well.  I am sure these will be no exception.

Butcher's Block Steer Stick.  Approximate retail value $3.00.  I am not quite sure this was a "true" bully stick.  It was not the normal shape, and did not last nearly as long as a bully stick typically does.  Faolan certainly enjoyed it, though.  I am always happy with dehydrated chews.

Melon Collie Watermelon Toy.  Approximate retail value $11.00.  Cute toy that fits in with the summertime theme.  As with nearly every other plush/stuffed toy, this is not durable enough for my dogs, as Neeko has already demonstrated.  She carefully dissected it, and removed the largest squeaker I have seen from within it.  But she enjoyed doing so.  This makes me think of Smashing Pumpkins.  I really hope someone gets that reference.

I am pleased with this month's BarkBox.  One thing I have noticed is that most all the treats recently have been biscuits, when my particular dogs seem to prefer moist or dehydrated meat treats.  Just a commentary, not a complaint.

This month's box has a circus theme.

The Goods

BarkMade Circus Elephant.  Retail value $11.00.  Cute, plush, squeaky toy.  Neeko has already enjoyed playing with it.  I didn't give it to her to play with, she helped herself to it from the box the night I received it...She enjoyed it.

Encore Firehose Dog Toy.  Retail value $15.00.  Click here for a similar toy.  Triangular shaped toy made in the USA of firehose material.  Circuses frequently feature "firemen."  This is a durable, waterproof toy that can be used for tug, toss, or water play.  It's shape means that it can also be thrown much like a frisbee.  I am happy with it, but wish it were just a bit larger.

BarkMade Chicken Biscuits.  Retail value $8.00. These are custom made for BarkBox by Healthy Dogma.  Made in the US with relatively limited ingredients, these treats are wheat, corn, soy and yeast-free!  I am sucker for packaging, and love this container, complete with it's circus-like feel.  I am sure my crew will enjoy these.

 FeelGood Trail Blazin' Bitz.  Approximate retail value $5.99.  We have received treats from this company in the past, and they were well received.  Canadian company which prides itself on how it sources it's ingredients.  These hard biscuit treats contain simple ingredients, and are liver based.  My dogs are fans of anything liver, so I am sure these will go over well, and I look forward to offering them to my crew.

6" Trachea Chew. Stated retail value $3.00.  We received this same chew in the January BarkBox.  I am a fan of dehydrated "meat" treats, and this certainly fits the bill.  Trachea is a natural source of chondroitin.  Neeko has actually already enjoyed this, once again helping herself to it.  She at least brought it to me to remove the wrapping.

June 2015 BarkBox Review

We received our June BarkBox earlier this week.  Reviews of past and/or current BarkBoxes can be read HERE.  This month's theme has an outer space feel to it.

The Goods

Soft-Flex Air Ball.  Approximate retail value $15.95.  Soft rubber toy that squeaks.  It's lightweight enough to throw, and has a fun, awkward bounce to it.  I will enjoy playing with the dogs with this.

Bixbi Peanut Butter Pocket Trainers.  Approximate retail value $9.21.  Bite-sized training treats that are wheat, corn, and soy-free. My dogs all love peanut butter, so I am sure these will go over well.  

BarkMade Space Rover Bandana.  Retail value $7.00.  Cute, reversible bandana.  Both my boys look great in blue, and Faolan readily wears a bandana once he lets me put it on him.

Barkworthies Lamb Lung Chips.  Approximate retail value $8.00.  As most everyone knows, I love single ingredient dog treats!  My dogs love dehydrated lung, and these have inspired me to make my next batch of homemade lung treats larger.

R2P Astronaut Dog Toy.  Retail value $13.00.  Plush toy with attached rope, made of a somewhat durable material.  It is quirky, but does not quite feel durable enough for my dogs.  Some other lucky dog will get to enjoy this.

May 2015 BarkBox Review

We recently received our May BarkBox.  I always joke that my dogs get more mail than I do. Reviews of previous and/or current BarkBoxes can be read HERE.

The Goods

West Paw Bumi Zogoflex  Approximate retail value $14.99.  Very durable feeling, made in USA tug toy.  It bounces, floats, and is dishwasher-safe.  Bruce LOVES to play tug, and I cannot wait to try this out with him.  It will also be fun for water retrieval with Neeko and Faolan.

Green Bark Gummies Health and Vitality.  Approximate retail value $7.73.  These are "enhanced" treats, and while packaged as healthy, do not contain the greatest ingredients.  I have never heard of canola yeast, but this ingredient rules them out for Bruce.  They do contain chia, which is touted for it's OFA content, fish oil.  Based on the "dose" suggested on the bag, these would not last one day for all three dogs.

Etta Says 12" Crunchy Duck Chew.  Approximate retail value $4.99.  My dogs love Etta Says!  I say that every time we receive a product from them.  Now the difficult part is deciding which dog gets to enjoy this delicious treat.

No Grainers Jerky Chews.  Approximate retail value $7.98.  We have tried treats from this company in the past, and they went over well.  These are made in the USA with American sourced chicken.  They are each approximately 2" in length, but easily break into smaller pieces, and have a strong, but not unpleasant odor. The dogs have already enjoyed several of these.  

Silly Bums Bumblebee.  Approximate retail value $13.42.  This is really cute.  This line of toys are the back ends of various animals/insects, hence the name.  It is a plush toy that both crinkles and squeaks.  While it is darling, and I am happy with it, it does not feel durable enough for my dogs, so I will either gift or donate this toy.

Overall, I am pleased with this month's BarkBox, even though I won't use two of the items.  The Zogoflex toy is my favorite item, easily.  To try BarkBox for yourself, and get a free box added to your plan, click HERE.

April 2015 BarkBox Review

This month's theme is Spring Bark, with a Spring and/or vacation feel to the items-strawberries, flowers, lamb, Easter Island, etc.

The Goods

Nature's Bits Oven Baked Soft Treats.  Approximate retail value $6.64.  Grain, gluten, and yeast-free treats that are made and sourced in the US.  Nice!  These are salmon-based, and contain strawberries and sweet potatoes, all items that my dogs like. These are not as soft as typical "soft" treats, but they are definitely not biscuits.  I have never heard of this company, but am happy to have received these.

BarkMade Flowers Bouquet.  Retail value $14.00.  This is quite cute, containing four individual flower toys. The flower portion of each toy is crinkly, and two of them have squeakers.  Unfortunately they do feel durable enough for my dogs, but I know some dogs who will certainly enjoy this.

Etta Says 7" Crunchy Elk Chew.  Approximate retail value $3.00.  My dogs LOVE Etta Says products!  I don't believe any of them have ever had anything containing elk, so this is exciting to me.  I know this will be much enjoyed by the lucky dog I choose to give it to.

PetProjekt Squeaki Tiki.  Approximate retail value $12.99.  Cute, soft, squeaky toy depicting an Easter Island Moai.  It is approximately 12", and made of non-toxic materials.  It doesn't feel incredibly durable, but I think Neeko and Faolan will enjoy supervised play with this.  

Sojos Simply Lamb Treats.  Approximate retail value $8.74.  My dogs (and myself) are huge fans of Sojos.  These treats are 100% raw, freeze-dried lamb.  My dogs are willing to work extra hard for treats like these, and I am very happy to have received them.

I am quite pleased with this month's BarkBox.  The toys are nice, even if my personal dogs won't be allowed to destroy play with one of them.  Both bags of treats are great, and I know the chew will be loved.  To get a FREE BarkBox with any plan purchase, click HERE.
