Tricks (f)or Treats! #StellaAndChewys Carnivore Crunch

Halloween is approaching, and we are gathering costumes and treats, for humans and canines alike.

One way to treat your dogs for Halloween (and the rest of the year) is with Stella & Chewy's Carnivore Crunch.

My Rotten Dogs are Stella & Chewy's ambassadors. We are being compensated to help spread the word about Stella & Chewy's, but only share information that is relevant to our readers.

Keeping trick-or-treaters happy is a priority for me, and I cannot resist a good costume. Candies and chocolates for the humans, and Carnivore Crunch for the canines.

dog in a witch costume

Carnivore Crunch are small treats (perfect for training) that are 98% meat, organs, and ground bone, and made with cage-free, grass fed and wild caught proteins.

They are grain and gluten-free, and at less than 3 calories per treat, you can offer them without guilt.

Their small size makes them ideal for training, and also as a "just because I love you" treat. I also love that hardly crumble at all, which is a bonus for any treat.

Neeko was more than happy to join the #StellaSquad, don her costume, and go trick-or-treating for some Carnivore Crunch!

If your dogs do tricks for treats, offer them some Carnivore Crunch!

How Do You Go Above and Beyond for Your Dog? #AKibbleAbove

My Rotten Dogs are Stella & Chewy's ambassadors. We are being compensated for helping spread the word about Stella & Chewy's, but all thoughts are our own.

It's the little things in life that matter. Without even realizing or thinking about it, I am willing most of us go above and beyond for our pets each day.

I know I do.

I purchased my home and property with them in mind. I feed them a well planned, balanced raw diet. (Which includes Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried and frozen raw!) They receive regular veterinary care. I spend $40 per month on Bruce's prescription alone.

I willingly let them roll in mud and/or poop, knowing that I am going to have to bathe them later, because it brings them joy.

I probably don't want to know what's on her face...
Stella & Chewy's wants to honor those who go above and beyond for their dogs.

Enter their #AKibbleAbove contest for a chance to win a year's worth of their Raw Blend Kibble and a custom framed illustration of your dog. Five second place winners will receive 6 months' worth of kibble.

To enter, share your story publicly to their Facebook page or on Twitter or Instagram, using #AKibbleAbove. Be sure to tag @stellaandchewys. Follow them on social media while you're at it!

Contest ends August 31, 2017. Must be 18 years of age or older and a resident of the United States to enter. Void where prohibited.

Rewarding Behaviors with #StellaandChewys

It's no secret that I am a fan of Stella & Chewy's raw food. My dogs are as well. While I haven't personally tasted it, it's apparently delicious.

So much so that my dogs are willing to work for it.

Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried raw makes a great reward or training treat!

I admit, I regularly bribe my dogs for good or desired behaviors, or for doing "tricks" that I want them to do. They typically comply, but the reward has to be worth it in their opinions at times. Stella & Chewy's is nearly always worth it to them.

My Rotten Dogs are Stella & Chewy's ambassadors. We are compensated to help spread the word about Stella & Chewy's, but all thoughts and opinions are our own.

I am not a trainer, nor do I claim or desire to be one. But my dogs all know several behaviors and/or tricks, and I encouraged them to learn them with tasty goodies.

I haven't taught any new tricks or behaviors recently, with the exception of teaching Faolan to "crawl." However, we still do regular sessions of their known tricks and behaviors, to keep them sharp.

When I do these outdoors, there are distractions. My chickens, other birds and critters, each other my neighbors tractor, lawnmower, golfcart, etc. So have to have something very high value to keep their attention.

Stella & Chewy's is just that to them-high value.

Notice how intently (for the most part) are paying attention to me? I believe it's because of the pieces of Stella & Chewy's I was holding. Faolan in particular wanted MY attention and the treats, and was being pretty demanding (but still cute) by barking at me.

It's quite easy to use the food as treats. Though it is freeze-dried, it is not super crumbly. The patties easily break into smaller pieces to be used as treats.

My dogs definitely go nuts for these, and are willing to work. I need to put my thinking cap on, and come up with new tricks and behaviors to teach them using these as a reward.

Do you have any trick suggestions for me?

Raw Goodness on the Go! #StellaAndChewys

It is officially summer, and summer is travel season.  Many Americans travel with their dogs each year, to destinations near and far.

Some of these traveling dogs are bound to be raw fed...and lugging around a heavy cooler (and keeping it iced) or going to the store daily for dog food (if there is even one nearby) isn't something most would consider a good time.

Stella & Chewy's freeze-dried raw is the perfect solution!

Shopping Local for #StellaandChewys During #SmallBusinessWeek

National Small Business Week is April 30 - May 6, 2017. I love shopping small, shopping local, and prefer to do it every opportunity I can.

Neeko and I recently visited City Dogs Grocery in Indianapolis to purchase some Stella & Chewy's Meal Mixers SuperBlends. City Dogs Grocery has two locations, one on Mass Ave in downtown Indy, and the other in Broad Ripple Village on the north side of Indy.  The princess and I visited the Broad Ripple location.

One of the great things about supporting small businesses is that you often get to meet the "boss." Neeko and I were greeted by Christi, the owner of both City Dogs Grocery locations. She was gracious and welcoming, and eager to show us the location of the Stella & Chewy's products we were seeking. She was also knowledgeable, sharing with us the benefits of the Meal Mixers SuperBlends.

Neeko, socialite that she is, walked in like she owned the place. She did a quick customs inspection on everything. City Dogs Grocery carries a variety of goodies, gear, and other necessary supplies for dog ownership. It is also spacious, clean, bright, and super cute.

We purchased our Meal Mixers, and were happily surprised to learn that they are currently BOGO! Buy one get one free. I couldn't believe my luck, and honestly should have purchased more. Because of course, I also purchased three bully sticks. Neeko talked me into them.

We had a great time. I got some needed supplies while supporting a local small business, and Neeko got to meet a few new friends.

Both locations of City Dogs Grocery are located in hip, urban areas with lots of other small, locally owned businesses nearby. If you are in need of goodies, food, or gear for your dogs, check them out!

For Healthier Pets Make a #RawFeedingResolution in 2017

I have been feeding Neeko and Bruce a full raw diet for nearly six years, and Faolan has been fed exclusively raw from the moment I adopted him 4.5 years ago.

Neeko was about a year old, and Bruce 1.5 years old when I first made the transition to a raw diet for them. Faolan was about nine months old when I adopted him.

My Rotten Dogs is a brand ambassador for Stella & Chewy's. We only share information we feel is relevant to our readers.

My initial raw feeding resolution many years ago came about because of a variety of reasons. I wanted to offer my dogs the best life possible. Neeko had chronic GI issues as a puppy and young dog, unrelieved by the most expensive and desired kibbles. Bruce had bald ears and was gangly. I took the plunge, and switched my dogs to a mostly homemade raw diet, and haven't looked back or had regrets since.

Everyone, and every dog has different experiences with raw feeding. The changes I initially witnessed astounded me. Neeko, who regularly had unexplained diarrhea and couldn't keep weight, developed a healthy, iron gut, able to tolerate any food offered to her. Bruce's ears filled with fur, and he put on some needed muscle. Faolan's thin, stiff, poor coat became soft, thick, and lustrous.

Neeko has bright eyes, a lovely coat, and a solid, healthy gut.

The things I witness every day keep me feeding raw. My dogs are all healthy weights, with good, balanced energy. They don't stink. They don't shed as much. Faolan and Bruce haven't had baths in over four years. My dogs each see the vet exactly once a year, for a wellness visit. No illnesses or unexpected vet visits. Their teeth are clean and their breath doesn't have a smell at all.

Clean teeth, no doggy breath, and well-furred ears.
I feed a mostly homemade raw diet, but I love the convenience and ease of Stella & Chewy's freeze dried raw. It makes the perfect breakfast for my crew, who are fed twice daily. They are complete/balanced meals, so I don't have to worry about my meat/bone/organ ratios being correct when I feed them. Plus my dogs love the taste, and I love being able to offer them variety in their diet.

I have recently made the resolution to incorporate more raw into my cats' diets. Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning they require meat protein in order to survive. My cats are picky beasts, but are loving their Stella & Chewy's.

I always encourage others to feed raw, even as a supplement to a kibble-based diet.

Stella and Chewy's wants you to make a raw feeding resolution in 2017 for your pets! They are encouraging all to try raw or incorporate more raw into their pets' diets. Follow @stellaandchewys on Instagram for a chance to win a free bag of their food.   For raw feeders share what you love most about feeding raw and encourage others to give raw a try. For those who’ve yet to try raw, share what has you most interested in giving raw a try or what your questions/concerns are. Be sure to include #RawFeedingResolution and #StellaAndChewys in your post. They will select posts from both groups of pet owners to receive a bag of their food. Contest ends on January 31, 2017.

If you feed any raw, what benefits are most important to you? If you haven't tried raw but are interested, what are your concerns?

Protein Allergies are No Problem with Stella & Chewy's

Did you know that beef and chicken are among the top food allergies for dogs?

Whether one feeds kibble, raw, homemade, or a combination of the three, avoiding chicken and beef can be difficult.

Stella & Chewy's offers a variety of dinners that do not contain chicken or beef, and many of them are single source protein.

Instinct Raw Market Meal Blends #ChewyInfluencer

I am a big proponent of easy to serve raw.  It is convenient for those who do not want to serve homemade raw, but still want to offer their dogs some raw goodness that is balanced and easy to store and serve.

Chewy sent my crew a bag of Nature's Variety Instinct Raw Market Meal Blends to try out.  I am a fan of Nature's Variety, so I was glad to receive it.

This is 100% freeze dried.  I love that the first three ingredients are beef, beef liver, and beef kidney. It also includes bits of produce which are easily distinguishable. I love being able to see real food in "dog" food.  It's grain and gluten-free.

One can easily tell that there is a pea, a blueberry, and a piece of sweet potato here.

Neeko was ready and willing to eat it dry.  She sang and danced. The bag includes rehydration instructions.  I rehydrated with warm water, and not much of the water actually reabsorbed.  My dogs more than willingly drank the excess water right up.  Hydration is important.

Another benefit of this product is that it's size makes it good for treats as well! While not stinky, my dogs were more than willing and happy to work for the individual pieces. Seeing as how they don't crumble easily, they are perfect to toss in a treat pouch or pocket.

I am pleased with this product.  It offered my crew a bit of variety, and provides an option for those who want offer their dogs some convenient, non-messy, balanced raw.

I was provided with complimentary product. All opinions are my own.

Who's a Good Dog? #ChewyInfluencer

"Who's a good dog?"

What dog owner hasn't asked this question?  I know I have, multiple times in succession on occasion.  Though I frequently complain about my dogs and their antics, I do feel that they are pretty good dogs.

I frequently bribe my dogs with treats.  I also frequently give them treats just because.  My favorite treats to give my crew are meat-based treats with limited ingredients.

Enter ZiwiPeak Good-Dog Venison Jerky Treats provided by the nice folks at chewy.com

As most know, I am a huge fan of venison.  My dogs love it, it's good for them.  ZiwiPeak sources theirs from New Zealand, which is perfectly acceptable to me.  These are air-dried, so I don't feel that they are overly processed, and contain very limited, simple ingredients.

They are small, thin strips, and easily break apart into smaller pieces.  The bag, though light, contains an abundant amount of treats, particularly if you break them into smaller pieces.  The crumble factor within the bag was virtually non-existent, which always makes me happy.

Faolan (and Neeko and Bruce) love these.  Faolan can be a bit of a treat snob, but he readily ate these, and barked me at me demanding more.  This is his ultimate seal of approval.

While I didn't feel that they had much of a smell at all, Faolan found them good enough to scent roll on.  I was able to catch the tail end of this on video, along with what I refer to as his "cute face" as he anticipates more treats.

Overall, I am pleased.  Venison-based treats with limited ingredients, that I feel good giving to my dogs.  Simply because they are good dogs.  Some of the time...

I was provided with complimentary product.  All opinions are my own.

THK Proper Toppers #ChewyInfluencer

I haven't met a product from The Honest Kitchen that I haven't liked.  Seriously.  So I jumped at the opportunity to try out their Proper Toppers, courtesy of chewy.com.

I had a family dog staying with me for five days late last week into early this week.  I have written about Sully in the past.  He is an exceptionally sweet, good dog.  I'm not used to that.  Just joking.  Not really...

Stella's Super Beef Meal Mixers from Chewy

I don't know why, but I cannot stop cracking up about getting a product made by Stella & Chewy's sent to me by the lovely folks at Chewy.com.  It's just cute sounding.

Anyways, those who know me know that I am big fan of all forms of raw in a dog's diet.  I like to say "some raw is better than no raw" and Stella & Chewy's believe "a little raw goes a long way!"  They offer frozen raw, freeze-dried raw, and their convenient Meal Mixers

Chewy offers these in beef, chicken, turkey, and salmon & cod varieties.  They are freeze-dried raw nuggets, meant to be added over a dog's normal food.  As the packaging states "A little raw goes a long way!"

According the chewy.com, Stella's Super Beef Meal Mixers provide an easy and convenient way to add raw, nutrient-rich meat, wholesome fruits & vegetables, probiotics and antioxidants to any diet. Mixers are freeze-dried to lock in nutrition and flavor and are minimally processed. This beefy mixer is made with grass-fed beef with no added hormones or antibiotics. Just scoop and serve and watch your furry friend come running!

Their small size and palatability make them perfect treats for my crew!  The ingredients are stella-r (see what I did there?) with the first five ingredients being Beef, Beef Liver, Beef Kidney, Beef Heart, Beef Tripe, and Beef Bone.  All things I have/would feed my dogs.

My gang loved them!  Items like these, that my dogs are willing to work hard for, are much appreciated.  Once Faolan finally stopped obsessing over the neighbor's tractor, he enjoyed some as well this particular day.

Trying to wait patiently...
As mentioned, these are intended to be added over a dog's regular food.  I did that as well.

They are pictured here over some ground goat tripe.  Tripe is one of Neeko's all time favorite foods, and she actually picked out the meal mixers to eat first!  That speaks volumes!

I am very happy with these.  My crew loves them, and I love that there are convenient options available for other dog owners to offer their pets the goodness of raw!

Rules are Made to be Broken - and I Break Raw Feeding Rules

One of the reasons raw feeding can be so overwhelming to newcomers or those considering a raw diet for their dogs is the "rules."  Depending on which model one follows, these so called rules can be mind boggling.  But they don't have to be, and there are very few hard and fast raw feeding rules.

I feed a mostly prey model raw diet.  I say 'mostly' because there are some PMR (and other forms of raw feeding) rules that I regularly break.

No ground meat.  Yeah.  I'm guilty of breaking this one. On the regular. There are various reasons this is considered a rule.  One is that ground meat has more bacteria, because the surface bacteria is ground in, which is probably true.  But dogs have amazing digestive tracts, meant to digest some pretty disgusting stuff, in a much shorter period of time than that which is needed for bacterial colonization to occur typically.  The other big reason ground meat is sometimes frowned up is that it is not what a dog in the wild would eat, or mentally stimulating enough.  Meh.  My dogs get plenty of mental stimulation.  If left to their own devices, they would regularly feast on deer poop.

Back in the fall, I was presented with the opportunity to pick up 375 pounds of fresh, wild venison, that had already been ground by a processor.  I would have been out of my fool mind to pass that up.
  1. It was stupid cheap.
  2. It was fresh, wild, "organic" game.
  3. Did I mention it was cheap?
  4. Venison is simply awesome, and my dogs love it, ground or not.
In the photo above, there is a large amount of ground meat pictured.  It is a complete ground lamb mix (meat, bones, organs in the correct proportions) that I purchased from a local farmer/raw dog food supplier.  Lamb can be difficult for me to source, and this was local product, at a good price. I couldn't resist.

99.8% of the tripe I have access to is ground.

Sometimes, when I'm desperate/low on meat, I will buy ground turkey at the grocery store and feed it to my dogs.  Which leads to the next rule I break.

No grocery store meat.  This one is not super common, but is supported by some.  I have yet to find factual evidence supporting that grocery store meat is bad for dogs.  Some say the bacterial load in grocery store meat is higher (than what?) because it is meant to be cooked for human consumption.  Some say it is dipped and/or sprayed with a sanitizing solution prior to packaging.

My dogs eat plenty of grocery store meat - pork roasts, beef roasts, ground turkey, etc.  In fact, all of the chicken they consume is purchased from the grocery store.  It's "human grade" and if it's good enough for me to eat, it's good enough for them to eat.  Besides, sometimes convenience wins out.

No dairy.  I agree that dogs do not need dairy.  But my particular dogs love cottage cheese and yogurt on occasion, so I feed it to them.  Especially if I notice that container of cottage cheese in the fridge that I never got around to eating that expired four days ago.

Some dog owner regularly feed their dogs yogurt, for the probiotics.

No dehydrated, premade, commercial, or freeze-dried raw.  This is a huge NO within the whole prey model (WPM) community.  The reasoning behind avoiding dehydrated and/or freeze-dried is that it is not truly raw.  Maybe not, but it's still better than 90% of dog foods on the market.  Premade/commercial raw is often frowned upon because it is typically ground, and subject to high pressure pasteurization, which may or may not kill off the beneficial enzymes that raw meat carries.

I semi regularly feed all of the above mentioned forms of raw.  Just yesterday I purchased some Northwest Naturals and Stella & Chewy's frozen raw foods, to give my dogs some protein variety in the forms of rabbit and pheasant.  My dogs also enjoy The Honest Kitchen, PrimalBravo, Sojos, and Instinct commercial raw foods.

Also, these forms of raw are incredibly convenient for those who want to feed raw, but don't wish to go the homemade route.  Not only that, some raw is better than no raw, and these types of raw allow people to easily add a bit of raw to their dog's diet.

Kibble is complete and balanced, so all meals should be complete and balanced.  I believe some BARF (Bones and raw food) style feeders have this mantra.  (Disclaimer-I don't know much about BARF feeding.) I believe in balance over time.  And over time, my dogs get pretty darn close to 80% meaty meat, 10% bone, 5% liver, and 5% other organ, which is the basic formula for a prey model raw diet.

But...I once went over a week without feeding any bone.  And I once went nearly a month without feeding "other" organ. Click HERE for more info on raw lingo. The dogs had no ill effects, short term or long term.

Feed 2-4% of the dog's weight daily.  I don't break this one, because it works well for me.  But not for everyone.  Some dogs are incredibly active, with high metabolisms, and require more.  Some dogs are easy keepers, and require less.  Bruce and Neeko both stay lean and fit eating approximately 2% of their body weight each day, while Faolan eats about 3% of his body weight daily.  Sometimes they eat less than this amount, sometimes more.  Each dog is different.  Know thy dog.

What it all boils down to is that raw feeding is not one size fits all.  What works for one dog may not work for another.  I am incredibly fortunate in that none of my dogs have protein allergies, all have cast iron guts, and can eat the same meals.  I have access to good sources.  As long as the diet is balanced, and the dog is not suffering from health problems or nutritional deficiencies, feed whatever form or combination of forms works best for you and your dogs.  All raw, half and half, or occasional raw.

FIVE STAR Raw Gets Five Stars From Us

five star raw dog food review

I love learning of raw pet food companies that I had not previously heard of.  To me, this indicates a greater public interest in raw feeding, which is always a good thing.

Five Star Raw Pet Food was developed because of the belief (fact in my opinion) that dogs truly THRIVE on a raw, natural diet.

About Five Star

  • Five Star sources all of it's ingredients in the US, and is produced in the US.  All of their products are USDA inspected, certified and approved.
  • Five Star raw is completely balanced, formulated by a Ph. D animal nutritionist. All recipes are meat-based, and include organs, finely ground bone, and fresh vegetables.
  • They are convenient-subscription plans are available, and the products are delivered directly to your door.
  • They are not high pressure pasteurized (HPP.)
  • Grain and gluten-free.
Our Experience and My Thoughts

Five Star sent us each of their flavors to try out.  The food arrived in a cooler box, frozen completely solid, which is nice.  They currently have five formulas available, four of which are single protein source diets.  They offer both duck and turkey diets, which are an option for dogs with allergies to more common proteins.

The food comes in one pound chubs, which is perfect for my crew.  My dogs eat about two pounds each per day, split up between two meals.  If a dog needs less food per meal, the food is easily divided up or portioned out, and can be safely thawed then refrigerated for three days.

Unfortunately for Bruce, this contains selenium yeast (which is perfectly acceptable), so only Neeko and Faolan were able to enjoy it.

wolfdog raw diet
Little boy CAN be patient.
My first thought upon opening the package was "This smells good!" I am sure this is do to the inclusion of vegetables.

It is very finely ground, which makes it easily edible for all dogs, small dogs included. The fine grind is perfect for puppies, and weaning young puppies onto a raw diet.  It also makes it easy to stuff into a rubber toy such as a KONG.

five star raw dog food, five star raw pet food
The princess eagerly eating her Five Star Raw.

Faolan inhaled his initial offering, licking the bowl clean so eagerly that he scooted it across the floor.  Neeko did as well.

However, the princess occasionally has texture issues.  When offered a second serving of thawed Five Star the following day, she turned her nose up at it.  I placed that food in the freezer for about 1.5 hours, and it partially froze.  She then ate it with no issues.  Apparently that particular day she was being picky about texture.  Feeding frozen or partially frozen is my go-to maneuver when she is in that mood.  Neither Bruce nor Faolan have texture issues.  Feeding frozen is not recommended for very small dogs.

New to raw or want to try Five Star?

Five Star offers an awesome starter pack It is perfect for those who are considering raw, new to raw, want to see if Five Star will work for their dogs, or want to offer their dogs some variety.  It is also quite inexpensive.  For just $12.99, which includes shipping and handling, Five Star will ship one pound of each of their flavors straight to your door.  I personally think this is an amazing offer.

I am quite pleased with our experience with Five Star Raw Pet Food.  I love that they are source and make their products in the US, in a USDA facility, without the use of high pressure pasteurization. They offer a variety of formulas, and ship straight to your door. If I hadn't already heard of them, I would jumping all over their trial offer.

Variety is the Spice of Life #MixItUp

My dogs are fed a 100% raw diet.  I know this is not doable for some, due to a variety of factors - cost, space, ability to source meat.  Variety is a key component of a dog's diet.  Kibble rotation diets are popular because dogs receive a variety of proteins and tastes.  An easy way to add variety to your dog's diet is with Instinct® Raw Boost® Mixers.

This post is sponsored by Instinct® and the BlogPaws Professional Pet Blogger Network. I am being compensated for helping spread the word about Instinct® Raw Boost® Mixers but My Rotten Dogs only shares information we feel is relevant to our readers. Instinct is not responsible for the content of this article.

My dogs LOVE their raw diet.  But they also love new flavors, textures, and forms of raw.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how some raw is better than no raw, and Instinct Raw Boost Mixers are an easy way to add the goodness of raw to a dog's (or cat's) diet.

I have been adding the Raw Boost Mixers to their raw meals for the last few weeks, and my dogs love them.  They immediately pick them out to eat first.

Bruce isn't allowed to be present during meal prep, he gets a bit too excited.
Faolan got tired of waiting! (I was prepping, setting the timer on the camera, prepping, etc.  Little boy is typically more patient than this.)
As you can see, Faolan got a little impatient, knowing he was about to receive some delicious Raw Boost Mixers!  I have been feeding/treating my dogs with the beef and lamb Mixers.  My dogs are fans of red meat, and I sometimes have difficulty sourcing lamb for them otherwise.

Instinct Raw Boost Mixers can boost your dog's meal, no matter what you feed.  They are made with pure animal protein for lean muscles and strong bones and nutritious oils for healthy skin and coat.

I could preach all day long about the many benefits of including raw in a dog's diet. Increased energy, improved skin and coat condition, and healthy digestion are just a few.  Did you know that raw fed dogs typically have smaller poops?  True story.

As an added bonus...

My dogs love these so much, that they are willing to work hard for them, so I have also been using them as a high value treat.

It's wintertime in Indiana.  Which means the sun sets at 5 pm, the weather is frigid, and it's snow, rain, thaw, mud, snow, thaw, mud, rain, ice, etc.  Because of this, the dogs sometimes get fewer walks, and less running time in the big yard.  I try to counteract this by doing indoor training.  Instinct Raw Boost Mixers make a perfect training treat!

I will run my dogs, either individually or as a group, through their litany of behaviors and tricks.  After each desired behavior or trick, they get a Raw Boost Mixer.

Neeko, who is typically my steadfast, patient girl, proved to me just how desirable these are.  I was having Faolan perform "watch me" while holding some Raw Boost Mixers in my hand.  I hadn't requested anything of her, and she decided to help herself to them.

TLDR; Instinct Raw Boost Mixers are an easy, convenient way to add some variety and the goodness of raw to a dog's diet.  They can be used on top of kibble, canned, or raw food.  No need to add water.  They are enticing to the pickiest of treat snobs (I'm looking at you, Faolan) and make an excellent treat as well.  These are currently on sale at PetSmart.  Large bags are 20% off, and the trial bags are 3 for $5.00, through January 31.

Find Instinct on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Have you tried Raw Boost Mixers?  How would/do you use them?

Some Raw is Better Than No Raw - #mixitup with Instinct® Raw Boost® Mixers

This will not come as a surprise to most, but I am a huge fan of the inclusion of any sort of raw food into a dog's diet.  I always like to say "some raw is better than no raw."  There is a convenient, easy way to add some raw goodness, or a bit of raw protein variety, to your dog's diet, without taking up precious freezer space.

Recent Raw Meals

After the break are photos and examples of raw meals for dogs.  I feed mostly prey model raw, but do occasionally use some dehydrated raw and premade raw.

These are just a few photos of some of my dogs' meals over the last two weeks, in no particular order.

My crew mostly eats the same meals as each other, with the same portion sizes.

I feed as much cut and protein variety as possible, though they ate quite a bit of beef heart and chicken the last couple of weeks.

Traveling with a Raw Fed Dog-No Cooler Required

Raw feeding is heavy.  Seriously.  Each of my dogs typically eat anywhere from 2-3 pounds of food. Per day. Each.  Let that sink in...

Some dogs eat more than that.  Smaller dogs eat less.

Many people travel with their dogs.  In fact, over 18 million Americans will travel with their pets this year.  Independence Day falls on a Saturday this year, and many folks will spend the holiday weekend camping with their dogs.

Traveling with a raw fed dog or raw feeding while camping typically involves lugging a heavy cooler full of meat, and trying to keep it sufficiently cold, or purchasing meat on the go at grocery stores. Neither is very convenient, both in terms of time and effort.  One doesn't want to lug large amounts of raw meat with them, or spend precious leisure time in the grocery store each day.

Bravo Homestyle Completes are balanced meals containing freeze-dried raw meat, vegetables and cranberries.  Once rehydrated with warm water, a 3 ounce bag makes 1 pound of food!

Waiting on dinner...
Warm tap water can be used, or water warmed over a camp fire.

After it's rehydrated, it smells like beef stew!  Made me hungry.  My dogs, even picky Neeko, love them.

Bravo Homestyle Complete Dinners are shelf stable, and easily portable.  They (along with raw fresh meat) ensure adequate hydration in a dog, due to the high moisture content.  Traveling can be stressful for a dog, and increase their metabolic rate.  So keeping them well-hydrated is important.

Bravo Homestyle Complete can be fed anywhere.  Inside, outside, in a tent, in a hotel, in a camper. Anywhere.

They are super convenient, easy to prepare, high quality raw meals.  What's not to like?  They can be used as a complete meal, a snack/treat, or as a kibble topper for those looking to add a bit of raw/less processed food to their dog's diet.

Ditch the dog food cooler and pick up some Bravo Homestyle Complete the next time you travel with your raw fed dog!

Variety is the Spice of Life: Sojos Wild Review

Many raw feeders, myself included, frequently mention the importance of variety in a dog's diet. There are many reasons for this, including:
  • Different protein sources contain nutrient and macronutrient profiles.
  • It can be mentally stimulating for a dog, and is definitely enjoyable for most dogs to be offered a variety of food.
  • You (humans) wouldn't want to eat the exact same thing everyday, would you?
  • Some dogs have allergies to common proteins such as beef, chicken, and turkey, so these owners are always seeking out variety for their dogs.
Sojos recently introduced Wild.  It is similar to other Sojos products, in that it contains freeze-dried meat and human grade fruits and vegetables.  What sets the Wild products apart is that the protein sources are "wild" and/or considered "exotic."  This new line includes free range venison, wild caught salmon, and wild boar.

These freeze-dried raw foods are also a great way for those who typically feed kibble to offer their dogs some fresh, raw food.  This is a complete meal, so there are no worries about balancing the diet, and these (along with other Sojos products) eliminate the "mess" that many people associate with a raw diet.

I am a longtime fan of Sojos, and jumped at the opportunity to try this new product out.  I selected the Wild Boar recipe for a few reasons.

My dogs have never had wild boar, by my choosing.  There is a slight chance of freeze-resistant parasites in fresh-frozen wild boar.  The freeze drying process eliminates any risk of that!  Another reason is because pork-based commercial foods are rare, and I think it is a great option for dogs who might be allergic to beef, chicken, or other common proteins. The final reason is that wild boar is a protein-rich, lean red meat.

Preparing this is as simple as preparing other Sojos products.  Simply measure out the appropriate amount of food and warm water, stir together, and let sit for 15 minutes to rehydrate and activate all the enzymes.

I love that the individual ingredients are easily identifiable.  Meat, peas, cranberries, etc.

It looks and smells pretty good when it is ready to serve.  Neeko was quite excited to be the initial tester here.

Anticipatory smile.
I am pleased and excited about this product.  Same stellar Sojos quality in a food that provides novel/exotic/wild protein sources.  For me, it is fun and enriching for my dogs to try new foods and different proteins.  For dogs fighting food allergies, these products could be a game changer.

As always, know your dog.  My dogs have no difficulties switching foods/proteins from day to day.  But each dog is different, and some dogs require an adjustment period when being fed something new or being transitioned from a kibble diet to a diet of fresh foods.  If new to Sojos, the company recommends transitioning over a 7-10 day period.

Try it out.  Your dog will be grateful.

I was provided with complimentary product.  All opinions are my own.
